touching a fire fighter

Six members of the Goldens Bridge Fire Department visited Increase Miller Elementary for Fire Prevention Week, bringing important information and a friendly introduction to fire safety as well as two gleaming trucks for tours.

The local aspect of the all-volunteer department was beautifully apparent to all when first grade Emily recognized her grandfather Charles Green, former chief and commissioner, and 65-year member of the Goldens Bridge Fire Department, then barreled into the arms of her dad, firefighter Charles (Bugsy) Green, Jr.

Another student recognized her au pair, firefighter Elias Scharfenberg!

Captain Ray Baker Jr. spoke to the students about what to do in case they saw or smelled smoke inside. His engaging approach led students to feel comfortable enough to ask very real questions about what to do in case of a fire emergency.

“Can you turn the lights on?” asked one student. “Yes, if the power is still on,” replied firefighter Gregory Ferrigno.

“What if you are in the bathtub?” asked another. “Get out of the bathtub,” said Commissioner Joe Simoncini.

“Can you hear?” was another good question – directed at firefighter Scharfenberg, who had put on full gear, including a protective helmet, mask, and hood. “That’s a great question. It gets really loud during a fire,” he answered.

“That’s why it is so important that you get a firefighter’s attention,” said Captain Baker. “If you can’t get out of a building safely, go to a window and yell. If a firefighter is inside looking for you, jump up and down. If you have a flashlight, shine it. Do what you can to let someone know where you are.”

Thank you for visiting, Goldens Bridge Fire Department, and for bringing students Fire Prevention Week mementos.
