pumpkin math

Stella and Penny estimated there’d be 100 seeds in their pumpkin. To their surprise, when they carved it open, they counted 465 seeds! Grace thought her pumpkin would be 12 inches tall. She was close; it measured 13 inches! One team reported that when they removed all their pumpkin’s pulp, its weight went down by 2 pounds.

Increase Miller’s second graders counted by tens, measured by inches, weighed by pounds. It was all part of pumpkin math—as much as cutting through the outer layer and scooping out the pulp, and carving the eyes, nose and mouth.

The fun investigation reinforced the second graders’ math skills including measurement, estimation and numbers to 1,000.

Thank you, second grade team and to all parents involved
